![]() I had five booksunder contract at once, plus the enormous task of building and maintaining an author brand.I began a two-year MFA program two weeks after I got my first book deal - a program Ientered in the hopes of ensuring I’d always have work as a professor, even if book dealswere low, or slow in coming. (But I’m an artist, so throw me a bone! I’d wanted to livein New York City my whole life, so that was always the plan, even before I got my bookdeal.)I could have chosen not to quit my day job, but it would have been tough. What could I have done differently?I could have opted to move to a citythat was less expensive, certainly. While I was buoyed by the very small, veryoccasional foreign book deal, this was it until there were more books in the pipeline.Let’s take a pause. I lived in Brooklyn, a borough of one ofthe most expensive cities in the world. No writer I knew had someone they trusted for financial advice, and our unconventional earnings made getting clear advice very difficult. The sum of $375,000 (the combined total of my two big advances), less my agent’scommission of 15% and taxes, is about what a teacher in the New York City public schoolsystem makes over the course of, say, four years. Our tax guy told us what to write off, but we had noidea what we were doing. The school where my husband taught had a financial planner thatoffered services to teachers, so we met with him and his partner, but it was obvious theyonly wanted to sell us life insurance. I figured they had cracked the code - swag, website - and I just needed to follow suit.Despite making some poor choices, I did try very hard to do right by this unexpectedreversal of fortunes. That was all my choice, a combination of an almost manic pursuit of joie devivre ( Fitzgerald would understand! ) and an attempt to keep up with successful authorswho seemed to know what they were doing. And no one said I should be buyingfancy cocktails. ![]() To that end: an expensive website no one told me I didn’t need, and swagto give out at events that didn’t make a difference at all for my social media presence orbook sales. As it turned out, it wasn’t really my dream life: When I wasn’t writing like mad to meetdeadlines, come up with new books to sell, and stay relevant in the industry, I was hustlinglike nobody’s business, trying to build my brand in hopes of getting on that coveted publisher didn’t tell me I had to get that website. Right now, I had to suck the marrow out of life - and invest heavily in trying to buildmy author brand. ![]() My reasoning was that after the next book I sold, I’d take care ofall that. I donated large sums of money toorganizations I cared about, and delighted in the feeling that I was making a real difference.Did I pay off my student loans? No, though I made a few large payments. I said yes to travel (oftenbook research I wasn’t reimbursed for), concert tickets, new shoes, and finally being able tobuy people the kind of presents I felt they deserved. Program that I was part of, in any way, arm me with the knowledge to protect and advocatefor myself in the publishing world? No.After that second advance came through, I stepped into my dream life: I quit my day job towrite full-time, moved to New York City, bought $15 cocktails, and learned (with astonishingspeed) not to worry about prices when ordering at a restaurant.
